Stephen Butts began his firefighting career at Northwest Harnett Volunteer Fire Department after he graduated from high school. He has served there for twenty years and currently serves as Volunteer Assistant Chief. Stephen has always wanted to be a career firefighter but was not sure it was the best thing for his family when their children were younger. In the summer of 2018, he decided to take the step to fulfill that goal and was hired by the Fuquay-Varina Fire Department. Stephen is currently a Firefighter II on B-Shift.
Stephen and his wife, Lauren, have been married for fifteen years and they have three boys. Mason and Garrett are thirteen and Wesley is eight. In his spare time, Stephen loves to be at home with his family. He and his boys like to hunt and fish together and he and Lauren love to watch the boys play sports.
When asked what he likes most about his job, Stephen replied, “I love being part of the brotherhood, being the first one in when attacking a fire and the last one out, and being able to help and serve the community in their time of need.” On the days he is not working at FVFD, Stephen co-owns a general construction and landscaping business and runs their family farm where they grow produce and seasonal plants.
