Frequently Asked Questions

QWhat building code is enforced in the Town of Fuquay-Varina?
AThe Town of Fuquay-Varina enforces the North Carolina State Building Code. This Code is based on the International Building Code.

QAre there any special codes in effect in the Town?
ACurrently the town has adopted the North Carolina Rehabilitation Code for use on existing structures. This pilot program was adopted statewide in 2006.

QIs a permit required for construction of a deck on my own property?
AYes, a permit is required and inspections will be made to determine compliance with the residential building code.

QWhen is a contractor licensed required?
AAny project where the cost of construction exceeds $30,000 dollars. Exception: A homeowner who lives in the home and plans to live there for 12 months may do his own work without a license. A permit an inspections are still required to determine that the work is in compliance with state codes.

QWhat size building can be constructed without a permit?
AA residential accessory structure that does not exceed 12' in any dimension can be constructed without having to meet the residential building code requirements. A permit is required to approve the location for meeting the set backs of the zoning in which the structure is located.

QHow do I schedule inspections?
AThe Town of Fuquay-Varina has a dedicated phone line used strictly for inspection requests. Requests called in prior to 4:00pm will be scheduled for the following working day. The telephone number for the inspection request line is (919) 552-1407. This works just like voice mail; you will need to leave your permit number, the type of inspection that you are requesting, and a contact phone number.

QHow many sets of plans are required for single family residential plan approval?
AThree sets of plans are required to be submitted with the permit application and two plot plans.
