The Fuquay-Varina Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department understands the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle. That is why we are proud to present numerous opportunities to local seniors to meet new people, visit new places, and get some exercise.

 

SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES

Monthly Birthday Celebrations!

(Ages 55 & Over)  The second Monday of every month from May—August we will be celebrating birthdays with free cake. It does not have to be your birthday to come, so join us for food and fun!

Dates: May 11, June 8, July 13 & August 10

Fee: FREE, Pre-registration required.

Red Velvet Cake Wars: The Play
(Ages 55 & Over) Stars Theater is putting on the play Red Velvet Cake Wars and a limited number of tickets are available to seniors. You must pre-register at the Community Center.
Dates: Saturday, June 27
Time: 1:30pm, show starts at 2:00pm
Fee: $5
Location: Meet at Stars Theater 123 E. Vance St.   Maximum number of tickets: 39

REGULAR GAME DAYS 

Bingo

(Ages 55 & Over) Join us every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month for Bingo. Cash prizes awarded!  

Time: 1:00—2:30pm

Fee: $1 per card. Cards are used for all games. Please bring small bills.

Wii Bowling

(Ages 55 & Over) Bowl using the Nintendo Wii. Full instruction on how to use the system will be provided. Date: 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month

Beading & Crafting

(Ages 55 & Over) Meeting group for beginners and pros. Other crafts welcome besides beading! Come share your talents and ideas with others.

Game Day

(Ages 55 & Over) Play Hand & Foot and other card games at the Community Center. Free coffee!

SENIOR TRIPS

 (Ages 55 & Over) Fees include transportation and admission costs. Participants are expected to bring extra money for lunch. Vehicles are not handicapped accessible. Please be sure to travel only on days when you have no other scheduled events and please be prompt for scheduled departure. Departure is from Community Center.

 

Lazy 5 Ranch

This is no ordinary zoo! The Lazy 5 Ranch located in Mooresville and allows you to get up close and personal with 250 rare and special animals in a horse drawn carriage. Please bring your own sack lunch  and water as we will be eating on the picnic grounds.

Historic Washington, NC

We will start with a walking tour of Historic Downtown Washington which includes many historic homes and gardens. After lunch we’ll do some walking along the waterfront and shop downtown stores. Be prepared for lots of walking. Bring a light jacket, good walking shoes, and bottle of water. We will not be stopping for breakfast on the way so please eat before departure or bring a snack.

Greensboro Science Center

The Greensboro Science Center is full of unique attractions with fun for all ages! We will watch the 3D film “Flight of the Butterflies” on their Omnisphere Theater and visit their Science Museum, SciQuarium and Discovery Zoo. Be prepared for lots of walking.

Downtown Lexington, BBQ and Bob Timberlake Gallery

Let’s celebrate National Senior Citizen Day with a visit to Lexington! We’ll visit the Lexington Candy Factory and shop at other downtown stores. Lunch will be at famous Lexington BBQ and will be followed by a visit to Bob Timberlake’s Gallery.

ART CLASSES

Senior Art:  Classes are free and located in the Crafts Room, but pre-registration is required. The instructor is Christina Myatt

 

Still Life Cubism                    

On this day we will study Cubism. We will look at various cubism styles like artist Ben Nicholson. Then we will paint a still life using the cubism format. This will be a lovely class, please come and join us.

Space Chalk               

 This will be a fun study of pastels. This Art project is inspired by pictures taken by the Hubble Telescope. Science and art together, how fun this will be. Each student will go home with their own original picture. There is nothing more beautiful than real life!

Chalk Printing               

In this class we will create stationary by using chalk and water. We will also create an original using watercolor, along with watercolor pencils, painters tape, and masking fluid. In this class there will be lots to do!

Landscapes with Bob Ross      

 In this class we will be doing a follow along landscape, via the television with Bob Ross. This will be a fun class to do together. Please be prepared to create something new. We will be using oil paints in this class.

Fitness Room

A monthly pass allows you unlimited use of fitness equipment. The fitness center includes treadmills, elliptical machines, a stair master, recumbent bicycles, universal weight system, and dumbbells. The room also has a flat screen television with cable.

 

Dates: Open year round, closed on Town Holidays

Times: Monday—Friday 8:00am—9:00pm

Saturday 8:00am—5:00pm

Fee: $15/month for residents; $30/month for non-residents

Senior (55+) Rate: $10/month for resident; $15/month for non -residents seniors

*Ages 14—17 must be accompanied by an adult

 

Pickleball

(Ages 18—Up) Pickleball has come to Fuquay! Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton, and Ping Pong. It may be a silly name, but it’s a serious sport! It’s fast paced and easy to learn, great exercise and lots of fun! It is America’s fastest growing sport.

 

Open Gym Play Times

Time: 9:45—11:45am

Open gym is free and please bring your own equipment if you have it.

Pickleball Demonstration Clinic for Beginners

(Ages 18—Up) For beginners of all abilities, learn the rules of pickleball from experienced instructors and start playing that same day! All equipment provided.

Senior Line Dancing

(Ages 55 & Over)  Join us for fun and fitness. Learn to line dance in a relaxed atmosphere. No partner required. Great for beginners and those wanting to review their steps and line dancing terminology.

NEW! Senior Beginner Line Dancing

(Ages 55 & Over) Learn to line dance in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. This class is designed for those new to line dancing. We will cover the terminology of basic steps. This form of dance requires no partner and is a great way to exercise your mind and body!
