The Fuquay-Varina Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department understands the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle. That is why we are proud to present numerous opportunities to local seniors to meet new people, visit new places, and get some exercise.

 

SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES

Monthly Birthday Celebrations!

(Ages 55 & Over) The second Monday of every month from January— April we will be celebrating birthdays with free cake from Stick Boy and ice cream! Be sure to preregister so we know how many to prepare for.

Valentine's Pizza Party
(Ages 55 & Over) Celebrate Valentine's
Day with the world's most romantic food, pizza.  Invite your sweetheart, neighbors and friends. Please pre-register so we know how many to prepare for. We will have a Valentine’s themed senior bingo immediately following.

NEW! The Mill Meet-up
(Ages 55 & Over) We will visit Fuquay-Varina's newly opened Main St. wine bar, craft been and coffee shop The Mill. Please meet there and please pre-register so we know who’s coming.
Invite your friends, support this new local business and the first day of Spring!

NEW! Steel Magnolias Play
(Ages 55 & Over) Stars Theater is putting on the play Steel Magnolias and a limited number of tickets are available to seniors. You must pre-register at the Community Center.
Dates: Saturday, February 28
Time: 1:30pm, show starts at 2:00pm

Location: Meet at Stars Theater 123 E. Vance St.

REGULAR GAME DAYS 

Bingo
(Ages 55 & Over) Join us every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month for Bingo. Cash prizes awarded!  
Time: 1:00—2:30pm
Fee: $1 per card. Cards are used for all games

Wii Bowling
(Ages 55 & Over) Bowl using the Nintendo Wii. Full instruction on how to use the system will be provided. Date: 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month

Beading & Crafting
(Ages 55 & Over) Meeting group for beginners and pros. Other crafts welcome besides beading! Come share your talents and ideas with others.

SENIOR TRIPS

(Ages 55 & Over) Fees include transportation and admission costs. Participants are expected to bring extra money for lunch. Vehicles are not handicapped accessible. Please be sure to travel only on days when you have no other scheduled events and please be prompt for scheduled departure. Meeting location is Lobby of Community Center.
 
NC Museum of History & IMAX Film
We will watch an educational film about D-Day in 3D at the IMAX theater and then eat lunch. After lunch we’ll head to see the first major exhibition about N.C.'s movies, television shows, cast members andcrews at the NC Museum of History.

Reynolda House: Museum of American Art
The Museum opened in 1967 and the estate has been in the Reynolds family since 1917 and houses some of the best works of American artist.. We will go on an American Arts Discovery for Older Adults . This group tour takes us through different parts of the museum and engages in a relevant hands-on art activity.

Historic Jamestown
We will visit historic Jamestown, NC, home to a large collection of handmade furniture. We will browse Furnitureland South for some shopping, eat lunch then visit Mendenhall Plantation, a historic Quaker Home place. Tour is 90 minutes and requires considerable walking.

Duke Lemur Center
Lemurs Live! tour we will learn about the similarities and differences between lemur species and what makes lemurs some of the most fascinating animals in the world. Bring your camera, as you will be amazed by these wonderful creatures! The tour is a guided experience with lots of standing and walking. The tour is approximately 90 minutes long.

ART CLASSES

Senior Art:  Classes are free and located in the Crafts Room, but pre-registration is required. The instructor is Christina Myatt
 
Study of Picasso
(Ages 55 & Over) In this class we will be looking at portraits created by Pablo Picasso. We will discuss his style, color, and lines. Then we’ll create a superhero portrait in the same style. Come ready to use your imagination and ready to exercise our Right brain. This class will be using tempera paint, and oil pastels.

Tissue Art
(Ages 55 & Over) In this session students will be instructed on three easy ways to create flowers. We will create a picture by manipulating tissue paper while also using watercolor. This will be a fun and colorful class!

Oodles of Doodles
(Ages 55 & Over) This class we will use our doodling skills to make a wonderful piece of art. We will use watercolor and ink to create this original masterpiece.

The Water Around Us
(Ages 55 & Over) We will learn techniques on how to make water look realistic and discuss water movement. We will practice this and use acrylic paint and show what we have learned.

Fitness Room
A monthly pass allows you unlimited use of fitness equipment. The fitness center includes treadmills, elliptical machines, a stair master, recumbent bicycles, universal weight system, and dumbbells. The room also has a flat screen television with cable.
 
Dates: Open year round, closed on Town Holidays

Saturday 8:00am—5:00pm
Fee: $15/month for residents; $30/month for non-residents
Senior (55+) Rate: $10/month for resident; $15/month for non -residents seniors

Senior Line Dancing
(Ages 55 & Over) Join us for fun and fitness. Learn to line dance in a relaxed atmosphere. No partner required. Great for beginners and those wanting to review their steps and line dancing terminology. New dances taught weekly.

(Ages 55 & Over) Seniors are invited for a free opportunity to line dance the night away. Instruction will be provided so beginners are welcome. We will have music and free beverages so come join the fun!
