Senior Programs

The Fuquay-Varina Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department understands the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle. That is why we are proud to present numerous opportunities to local seniors to meet new people, visit new places, and get some exercise.

Listed below are our offerings from May-August 2012 specifically for senior citizens.

Senior Trips:
Fanta City International Shopping Center
Visit Greensboro's first international shopping mall with more then 70 retail stores and offices, offers a unique shopping experience. Browse for unique items at stores such as Gold City, Laundry Depot, Soldano's Bakery and U & J Cafe.

Wrightsville Beach
(Ages 55 & Over) Celebrate the start of summer by taking a trip to the beach. Located just outside Wilming-ton, Wrightsville Beach offers plenty of sand, sun, and fun. Parks and recreation will bring a cooler to hold any food or non-alcoholic drink you may wish to bring. Collapsible chairs only.

American Music Jubilee
(Ages 55 & Over) Our Music Variety Show is a two hour extravaganza that will have you singing along with your favorite songs, laughing out loud, and feeling a stirring of pride from deep within your soul as we pay tribute to this great country.

Carolina Mudcats
(Ages 55 & Over) Spend a late spring evening at the ballpark. The Carolina Mudcats are the AA affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and are housed at beautiful Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. Game time is 7:15pm.

AARP Driver Safety Class
Join your friends in a safety learning experience by taking this AARP Driver Safety Program, one-day, refresher course espe-cially designed for drivers aged 50+ (Class is open to all age groups). This is the oldest and largest course of its kind and it will bring you up to date on such topics as knowing your-self, your driving partners on the road, safe driving tech-niques, today’s highways and laws, your vehicle and you and judging your driving fitness. The course content has a heavy reliance on training videos and an expectation that students will be willing to go over video review material at home. Lunch, in the form of pizza and soft drinks, will be furnished by CapTel North Carolina and a CapTel representative will explain the Captioned Telephone service while we eat lunch. Registration deadline is 4:00 PM on the Friday before class.

Blood Pressure Clinics
Free blood pressure clinic provided by 3HC Home Health and Hospice. A Registered Nurse will answer health questions and provide advice on healthy habits. For more information, call Tamara Guilford, RN at 3HC 919-810-2601.

(Ages 55 & Over) Share your literary viewpoint and make new friends! Meets every second Wednesday of the month.

End of Summer Sundae Social
(Ages 55 & Over) Celebrate the end of summer by coming to the Community Center for a free sundae social. Participants will make their own sundae, and choose from a variety of toppings and sauces. Following the sundae, we will play a few games of bingo for a free monthly exercise room pass.

Gentle Yoga for Age 55+
(Ages 55+) This class is designed to accommodate partici-pants at most levels of health and experience with yoga - including no experience!! Class includes a seated warm-up and modified standing postures, followed by restorative seated poses. Focus is on ease of purpose to warm up the body, bring flexibility to muscles and joints and wake up the nervous system. Emphasizing a relaxed manner and feeling content during your practice, the sequence ends with deep relaxation, breathing techniques, and meditation to remove impurities and bring a sense of well-being to the body and radiant peace to the mind. Participants please bring a blan-ket.

Lunch Meet-up
Let’s all meet at the Golden Corral for a delicious lunch. We can use this opportunity to plan ahead for new trip ideas for September through December! Attendees will pay their own expenses. Please call ahead so we can reserve tables.

Senior Bingo
(Ages 55 & Over) Join us every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month for Bingo. Cash prizes awarded! Coffee and lemonade provided.

Fee: $1 per card. Cards are used for all games

Senior Game Day
(Ages 55 & Over) Meet some friends and play Mahjong, Hand & Foot and other games at the Community Center. Bring your favorite game and teach others! Free coffee! Date: Wednesdays & Saturdays Time: 1:00pm Fee: FREE Location: Multi-Purpose Room

Senior Line Dancing
(Ages 55 & Over) Join us for fun and fitness. Learn to line dance in a relaxed atmosphere. No partner required. Great for beginners and those wanting to review their steps and line dancing terminology. New dances taught weekly.
