Senior Programs

The Fuquay-Varina Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department understands the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle. That is why we are proud to present numerous opportunities to local seniors to meet new people, visit new places, and get some exercise.

Senior Art—Amazing Abstracts
(Ages 55 & Over) We will review other abstracts and discuss their lines and color. We will create our own using paint, oil pastels chalk, chalk pastels, and permanent markers to create a unique piece of art. This will be a very uninhibited class. Come have some fun with us.

Senior Art—Oodles of Doodles
(Ages 55 & Over) This will be a fun class. We will be learning Zentangle® techniques and patterns. It is an easy to learn method of creating art from drawing structured patterns and doodles, so start practicing your doodles. They are more than meets the eye. We will be using black and colored permanent markers.

Senior Art—Self Portrait
(Ages 55 & Over) We will be going over the basic placement for a realistic portrait. We will then practice creating our own. We will use watercolor, pastels, and pencils to do this. Come for a fun social gathering with friends!

Senior Art—Wind Blown
(Ages 55 & Over) In this hour we will practice this cool technique of making trees. We will use acrylic paint, and straws to make these beautiful pictures. Come and blow some time with friends!

Wii Bowling
(Ages 55 & Over) Bowl using the Nintendo Wii. Full instruction on how to use the system will be provided. Date:  1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month

(Ages 55 & Over) Play Mahjong, Hand & Foot and other games at the Community Center. Free coffee!

Bingo
(Ages 55 & Over) Join us every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month for Bingo. Cash prizes awarded!

Memorial Day Potluck
(Ages 55 & Over) Join us at the Community Center as we celebrate Memorial Day with a potluck lunch with your favorite summer recipes. Please register in advance so we know how many to prepare for. Bingo is immediately following.

Summer Fun at Hosanna’s
(Ages 55 & Over) We will visit Fuquay-Varina's newly reopened brewery, Hosanna Brewing Company, for a tour and a tasting.

Field Day and Picnic
(Ages 55 & Over) Enjoy the heat of the summer by playing a few games of cornhole, toss a few Frisbees, hanging out with friends, and enjoying some good food. Be sure to call ahead, or log on, and register.

Senior Nature Walks
(Ages 55 & Over) Join us for Move-It Mondays where the first Monday of the month we will take a hike. Bring your camera or journal, good walking shoes and water.

Senior Trips
(Ages 55 & Over)  Fees include transportation and admission costs. Participants are expected to bring extra money for lunch. Vehicles are not handicapped accessible. Please be sure to travel only on days when you have no other scheduled events. Meeting location is Lobby of Community Center.
 
Cape Fear Botanical Garden
This beautiful garden is located between Cape Fear River and Cross Creek just two miles from downtown Fayetteville.  Founded in 1989, the Garden encompasses 77 acres of pine and hardwood forest, and boasts meticulously preserved natural areas of the region’s indigenous plants, trees and wildlife.  The cultivated garden areas showcase more than 2,000 varieties of ornamental plants, and include our renowned Daylily, Camellia and Hosta gardens.

Duplin Winery
Located in beautiful Rose Hill, Duplin Winery offers free daily tours of our state-of-the-art production facility and vineyard as well as free tastings of our award winning wines.  Since 1970 this family run winery has been growing Muscadine grapes to make their signature wines. We will also be eating at their restaurant The Bistro.

Morehead Planetarium & Science Center
Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, with one of the largest planetariums in the United States, is located on the north end of the campus of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Morehead's building and grounds, complete with a 68-foot-tall fulldome planetarium, exhibits and classrooms, reflecting telescope and observation decks, portrait gallery, rose gardens and massive sundial were built for students of all ages with all interests.

Seagrove Pottery Tour
Come discover one of the finest sources of decorative pottery on the East Coast and the largest community of potters with the longest continual history of pottery making in the United States. We will visit the North Carolina Pottery Center and Seagrove Pottery where Seagrove pottery is showcased and others such as Native American pieces are on permanent display.
