Pop! Fuquay-Varina Downtown Art

Starting at 502 E. Broad Street
Fuquay-Varina Downtown and Open Art Society partner to produce Pop! Fuquay-Varina Downtown, a series of seven storefront window installations by artists from around the Triangle, February-May 2015.  The artwork created for Pop! Fuquay-Varina Downtown explores both the history of Varina and the many facets of Love.  The installations will be on display through May 2015. An artist tour and reception will take place on March 6th. The tour will start at 6pm at 502 E. Broad Street. The tour will end at 7pm with an artist reception at The Mill, 146 S Main St. in the Fuquay District.
 
March Madness Fashion Show

Doors open at 10:00 am for shopping. Show starts at 11:00 am, Luncheon at 12:00 pm, Finale 12:45-2:00 pm. There will be door prizes and a wonderful lunch along with fabulous entertainment.  Only 150 seats!  Get your tickets early! Tickets are $10 which are sold at: Mad Hatter, Garden Hut, David Anthony’s, The Mineral Springs Inn, Shoppes on Main and at the door day of event.  Fashion are provided by: Kohls, Belk, Cousin Couture, Glam, Pass it On, Itsy Bitsy, Ashworth’s and Merle Norman.

Easter Egg Hunt

The Easter Bunny hops into town a week early on Saturday, March 28 bringing thousands of candy and toy filled eggs to South Park in Fuquay-Varina for the Town’s annual Easter Egg Hunt. Grab a basket or bag and plan to bring the kids for what has become a wonderful Fuquay-Varina tradition. This free event begins at 10:00 am. Children ages 10 and under are invited to participate. The Easter Bunny is eager to pose with kids, so make sure to bring a camera.

Art After Darks

The Art Walk happens monthly starting in April!  Art after Dark will be held on the second Friday of each month (April - September) beginning at 5:00pm in Fuquay-Varina. The event is organized as a potluck of creativity, with local businesses, organizations, and artists are all encouraged to get involved to help us to promote and support the Arts in Fuquay-Varina. 

Teen Day Fuquay

Teen Day Fuquay, an alcohol and distracted driving awareness program, offers young people the opportunity to experience the realities of mixing alcohol and texting with driving in a controlled situation and see the impact of drunk driving on real families by watching a simulated rescue. The goal is for pre-teens and teens to gain hands-on experience and learn the facts on April 18 that will help them make wiser choices about driving and keep their lives full of endless possibilities.

Over the past four years, the program has garnered rave reviews from parents, educators and students. Every year, the event gets bigger! In 2014, more than 1000 teens attended Teen Day Fuquay! The event is free! Pizza will be served. Lots of prizes! The first 250 teens to complete the Drive Wise Course will received a free t-shirt! 

En Plein Air Paint-off & Auction

For art lovers:  This event is a must attend event!  For two days, stroll around downtown Fuquay-Varina and watch some of the area’s top artists bring our downtown landscape to life!  See artists paint on April 17th (starting at noon) & 18th (starting at 10 am).  
Live Auction:  On Saturday, April 18, meet the artists and view the beautiful paintings beginning at 6 pm.  At 7pm a spirited auction will be held on Depot Street where community and triangle area art patrons will go head to head as they bid to take home one of these one-of-a-kind works of art! 
Public Art:  The top three winners’ paintings will be enlarged, reproduced and placed on vacant brick walls in our historic districts adding to the current collection of public art, organized by Fuquay-Varina Downtown and sponsored by Bob Barker, Inc.

Artists (high school age through professionals) are invited to participate in this year’s event. Each artist must submit an online application and send three images of their original work, no later than MARCH 13, 2015. Once accepted, artists will be notified of the details of the contest and will be required to sign a waiver, allowing Fuquay-Varina Downtown to use images of their painting for future public art and marketing purposes. RAIN DATES are April 24-25. 

Celebration of the Arts

The Celebration of the Arts, now in its 12th year, has grown from a street-type art fair to a large art festival with more than 90 art vendors. The Celebration of the Arts is part of a town-wide festival called Celebrate Fuquay-Varina. This festival showcases regional music acts as well as a variety of free, family-fun entertainment. The combination of music, great food, fun activities and incredible art vendors attracts large crowds. In 2012, the estimated attendance at Celebrate Fuquay-Varina/Celebration of the Arts was more than 9,000 people. We are currently accepting Artist Applications. EARLY BIRD applications receive a discount before April 10th!!! Applications are due by Friday, April 10th. If all available booth spaces are not filled, applications MAY be accepted after the deadline. We had to turn artists away last year so get your application in EARLY!!

The Professional Women's Leadership Association will host a Chair Affair live auction during 3rd Annual Savor Event on April 11, 2015. We are encouraging creative, artistic people to decorate a chair for donation to be auctioned off. All proceeds go to our scholarship program which has successfully awarded 33 scholarships to qualified students. Chairs will need to be completed and delivered to the Fuquay Varina Chamber of Commerce office by March 31, 2015. Anyone interested should contact Diana at the Chamber, 919-552-4947 or Donna, 919-552-8077. We have 30 openings, so call quickly to reserve a slot. New this year, each artist & chair will be featured on our Facebook prior to the event. The sooner your chair is delivered to us, the more exposure your art will receive.

IN THE SCHOOLS

Ballentine Elementary School is Seeking Volunteers!
Ballentine Elementary School will be having End of Grade Testing on May 19, 20, & 21 and June 16, 17, & 18. We are in need of volunteers to help us with proctoring the assessments. Testing begins promptly at 9:30 a.m. on those dates. Proctors will be trained on their responsibilities before test days.

Proctors will need to be registered as volunteers with the school. To register, you may stop in the school on any Monday during school hours (8:15-4:15) to complete the online registration process. You will need to register as a volunteer by March 30th.

PWLA Women’s Scholarships Now Available
Applications for several PWLA scholarships are currently being accepted. The Professional Women’s Leadership Association (PWLA) is an organization of the Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce. The mission of PWLA is to bring diverse business women together to offer for networking, business development and support through mentoring and scholarships.

PWLA has created various scholarship programs for students attending Wake Tech Community College, F-V High Schools, and a student whose parent is serving active duty, active reserves or an honorable discharged veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, with the intention of obtaining a higher education. A significant portion of the membership dues fund the scholarships. Call 919-552-4947 to learn more.
