The Town of Fuquay-Varina operates under the Council-Manager form of government. This means that the Town Manager is the chief executive officer and is responsible to carry out policy set by the governing body (Board of Commissioners) in administering all affairs of municipal government.
The governing body of the Town consists of the mayor and five commissioners. At-large elections for the mayor and commissioners are held in November of odd numbered years. The mayor is elected for a two-year term and commissioners are elected for four-year terms.
The Board has adopted "Rules of Procedure" in accordance with state law and town ordinances, under which it operates as a governing body. In order for the Board to conduct a meeting, a majority or quorum of the actual membership of the Board must be present. Most issues require a simple majority vote in order to be approved, denied or adopted. The Mayor cannot vote on issues, except to break a tie vote.
