Transportation Projects Moving

2017-construction updates graphic

Good news!  The following transportation projects are moving toward construction.

The lane widening project at the Judd Pkwy/Main Street intersection has completed right-of-way certification and the town expects to get construction authorization from the Federal Highway Administration within the next 30 days.  What does this mean?  The Town plans to seek construction bids in early October with actual construction to begin after completion of the Sunset Lake/Purfoy/Main intersection which is currently advertising for construction bids.  A bid award for this project is anticipated soon after the Sept. 14th bid due date and the project should be completed by December.

Sunset Lake/Purfoy/Main Intersection improvements include:

  • Modifications on Purfoy Road to allow for removal of the cones that provides full functionality of the 2nd left turn lane which will also improve traffic flow on the existing thru lane.
  • The Sunset Lake Road approach will include 2 dedicated left turn lanes, a dedicated thru lane and a right turn lane.
  • Removal of the concrete island north of the railroad on Sunset Lake Road to allow better access to the southbound dual left turn lane as well as increase stacking of the left turn lane on to Broad Street.
  • Pedestrian crossings and signals at the intersection will be restored.

Both intersection improvements are funded by a $21 million transportation bond approved by voters in November 2015 and LAPP grant funding secured by the Town of Fuquay-Varina.
