The Fuquay-Varina Fire Department Local Relief Fund Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s annual scholarship program. The scholarship program is designed to give financial assistance to active firefighters in the department, dependents of active or retired firefighters of the department, and new fire department recruits entering a full-time Fire Academy. This year’s winners are:
The Firefighters Relief Fund (FRF) was originally established in 1907 by the North Carolina Legislature to financially assist firefighters injured in the line of duty, and to ensure that no firefighter would become financially destitute through no fault of their own. The FRF is funded by a portion of the Gross Premium Tax (GPT) on insurance policies containing fire and lightning protection, as well as certain automotive policies. The Commissioner of Insurance distributes funds to local firefighter relief funds (LFRF) and the North Carolina State Firemen’s Association (NCSFA) provides program oversight. These monies may be used to provide financial assistance to injured or destitute firefighters, provide short term financial assistance for spouses and dependents of firefighters killed in the line of duty, provide supplemental retirement, educational opportunities, or other certain defined benefits.
The Board of Trustees selected this year’s award recipients based on citizenship, outstanding moral character, academic performance, and their desire to further their education. Chairman of the Board of Trustees Johnny Jones stated, “We are honored to assist these two young ladies this year with their educational and professional goals. The sky is the limit for these two and we can’t wait to see where their future takes them.”
